DOVER — Sometimes a simple gesture can have a profound effect. Just ask Milissa Wood, assistant coach of the Kent Wild Kats, an adult Delaware Special Olympics bocce team. The team’s coach is Wood’s husband, Joe Wood, and the two have struggled to find adequate practice facilities for the team. The parents of one of the athletes live at Noble’s Pond, Dover’s premier active lifestyle community in Dover, Delaware. Among the recreational amenities available at the community are bocce courts. The coaches reached out to the community, and once the Noble’s Pond management team learned about the Kent Wild Kats’ need for a practice court, they were happy to help, inviting the team to use the Noble’s Pond bocce courts on Saturday afternoons.

“I can’t tell you what a positive difference it has made for our team to practice at Noble’s Pond,” said Milissa Wood. “The facility itself is wonderful – it’s in a great location with ample parking, rest rooms and lighting. The courts are very well taken care of and everyone is so friendly and welcoming. The athletes have really grown both in skills and confidence now that they have such a nice place to practice.”

“The Kent Wild Cats play bocce in the spring and the fall,” said Jon Busby, director of media relations for the Delaware Special Olympics. “Their next competition will be a qualifying meet May 11 at the Delaware Turf Sports Complex in Frederica, DE from 9-11 a.m. The meet is free for the public to attend. During the event, judges will review the skill levels of the various teams, so they can be more evenly matched at the upcoming Divisional competitions.”

Special Olympics Delaware has been serving adults and children with intellectual disabilities since 1971. The organization provides year-round sports training and athletic competitions in a variety of Olympic-type sports for more than 4,200 athletes, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. www.sode.org
